Peace Action Day

Every year between the 6th of August (Day of the nuclear Holocaust in Hiroshima in 1945) and the 9th of August (Day of bombing of the city of Nagasaki 3 days after the bombing of Hiroshima) we at Ann Mary School take out time to specially remember these horrific events and their victims. War and Violence are not events of nature, they are man made disasters. History, past and present offers us all lessons to learn and choices to make. We all are sufferers of violence in it’s multiple incarnations but we are also the perpetuators and creators of violence. Hiroshima therefore lives on our own doorsteps. When frustrated or angry we often go for violence like a chain smoker for a cigarette. Violence and aggression are among other things also bad and addicting habits. During these Peace Action days we play, sing, draw, dance, talk and even cook or bake peace at Ann Mary. Every child from PKG to class XII is involved in activities which foster and encourage sharing, thinking about others, and doing peaceful resolutions of conflicts if they cannot be prevented in the first place.

"IMAGINE THERE IS A WAR AND NO ONE TURNS UP"
Peace Action DAYS at Ann Mary School

“No more Hiroshimas!!” said all the Ann Mary School fraternity in unison on the ‘Peace Action Days’ between 6th to 9th of August 2006. Since its inception over twenty years ago not a year, not a week, not a day has passed without the Ann Mary School children and staff not thinking, playing, singing or even cooking or baking peace in their day to day work. Remember the Peace Cake baked last year requiring 6 spoons of love, 1500grams of understanding, 1 liter of patience and so on…… this year again, the Ann Mary ambassadors of peace from Kindergarten right up to the senior classes put up various programs and promised to stop such insanity from being repeated in future. The Ann Mary family promised to bring attention to people’s responsibility for the cause of disarmament. The weapons of war were named as abominations that cause desolation and should be transformed to objects that promote life. Through discussions, songs, skits, resolutions and myriad other ways the children realized the importance of becoming a people oriented society rather than a thing oriented society.

Dr. Deepak Arora and Mrs. Silvia Arora inspired the students with stories and poems. In his short speech, Dr. Arora made the point that violence more than anything had become a habit, a way of life with people now a days. Human beings go for violence like a chain smoker for a cigarette. He illustrated this by relating a story about a man who wanted to bring peace to a war torn region by using the nuclear bomb. The man goes to an angel who has the power to grant every wish and tells the angel about his good intentions of using the bomb for a good cause namely of ending the war and bringing peace upon the war torn region. The angel curses the man for his stupidity and says “Why don’t you ask me for Peace then?”
As citizens of the world the Ann Mary School promised to remove the devil’s weapon, made by man, by the wisdom of man. The children implored Almighty God to make human beings channels of peace, so that the manna of peace flows through them and drives away all hatred from this world and ensures the perpetuation of mankind as a happy species.
